Temperate forest ecosystems are made up of 3 distinct plant categories: Coniferous tress, broad-leaved evergreens, and deciduous trees. Maple trees fall under this last category because of their large flat, broad leaves that soak up the sun in order to convert the energy into food, and because of the characteristic seed pods. Children often call the pods of maple trees helicopters because of their two or more pronged shape.
